HU organizes National Research Conference on Peace & Conflict in Ethiopia.
Hawassa University College of Law & Governance in collaboration with GIZ Civil Peace Service(CPS)-Internally Displaced Perons (IDS) Project has organized a national research conference on Peace and Conflict in contemporary Ethiopia held at South Star International Hotel.
Dr. Deberwork Debebe, Dean of the College, officially welcomed participants where he noted that peace, good governance and justice are the most important pillars of democracy that any nation demands for creating stable community with sustainable socioeconomic development. He remarked that Ethiopia is suffering from different internal conflicts caused by various embedded factors that require vigilant and systematic research based dialogues for making sustainable remedial interventions.
Dr. Chirotaw Ayele, President of Hawassa University, stated in his opening remarks that peace is a vital component of life and the conference is very timely and important to contribute scholarly points to our national policy of maintaining sustainable peace. The president underscored the provision of alternative policies based on scientific studies from the academic community to the government in order to ensure our existence as a strong and peaceful nation. He also extended his gratitude to the Sidama regional state bureau of peace & security for its positive contributions in making the region a peaceful place.
The guest of honour at the conference was Deputy Commissioner Alemayehu Assefa, deputy head of the Sidama regional state peace and security bureau, who also appreciated the positive contributions of Hawassa university to the regional peace and beyond. He called upon other CSOs to follow the examples of HU and GIZ to work in collaboration with his bureau towards creating peace and harmony in Hawassa city, the Sidama region and Ethiopia at large.
Mr. Belay Raga’a, GIZ CPS-IDS program dupty coordinator, presented their continued efforts in addressing peace building and conflict resolution in and around the Sidama region in collaboration with CSOs and government organizations including HU.
During the conference, 8 research papers were presented by scholars from different universities, followed by plenary discussions.
