HU Students' Union President Participates on the African Student Union General Assembly in Abuja, Nigeria.
President of Hawassa University Student Union & V/President of Ethiopian Higher Education & Institutions Students' Union, Essey Petros, represented Ethiopia as one of three selected delegates at this year's African Student Union General Assembly held in Abuja, Nigeria, with the theme, "Pro-African Education System: A Key to Unlock African Potential, December 2-6, 2024.
Essey took center stage, engaging in dynamic discussions and workshops focused on shaping the future of education across Africa. He delivered presentation highlighting the urgent need for support to re-open universities affected by conflict in northern Ethiopia, underscoring the nation’s resilience in education.
On the event, a strong emphasis was placed on fortifying and documenting African student unions to ensure their voices are heard, and the assembly discussed the establishment of an agency in East Africa, particularly in Ethiopia, to enhance collaboration among nations. Besides, a proposal for Ethiopia to host the next African Student Union General Assembly was raised, an opportunity we look forward to.
In addition to his active participation on the general assembly, Essey engaged in insightful conversations with Ambassador of Ethiopia His Excellency Geremew Haile, discussing the influence of Ethiopian youth and the unique challenges faced by Ethiopian students abroad.
