WGCFNR organizes a National Research Conference.
Wondogenet College of Forestry and Natural Resources (WGCFNR), Hawassa University, in collaboration with office of the Vice President for Research & Technology Transfer (VPRTT), Ethiopian Forest Development (EFD) and Global Green Growth Institute (GGGI) has organized a national research conference under the theme “Forestry and Natural Resource Management for Sustainable Development" on May 31, 2024 at SIDA Hall, WGCFNR.
Dr.Beyene Teklu, acting Dean of the college, explained the objective and focus areas of the conference while welcoming participants. He said that the conference was organized as a platform to bring researchers, policy makers and partners in the field of forestry and natural resources on contemporary global and national issues and priorities.
Dr. Motuma Tolera, Deputy General Director of EFD and former dean of WGCFNR, delivered a keynote speech where he highlighted the crucial role and contributions of forest and natural resources in the global and national arena of sustainable development, GDP growth, tourism and ecotourism, income generation, job creation and environmental protection. He also highly appreciated the engagement and contribution of WGCFNR in the field of forestry saying that the college has been exerting its optimal potential and discharging its national duties and responsibilities by conducting scientific research, enhancing and disseminating scientific knowledge and skill as well as producing capable and competitive man power which are the backbones and major pillars of the national forest development initiatives.
Dr. Tafesse Matewos, VPRTT at HU, officially closed the conference where he underscored the need for strengthening the college and its research undertakings as a pioneering center of excellence at national level.
A total of seven research papers were presented by scholars across three areas: forestry and agroforestry, natural resource management and wildlife and ecotourism management, and the conference was attended by government officials, NGOs, institute and sector office leaders at.
