English language Improvement Training at the College of Social Sciences and Humanities, HU
THE English Language Improvement Centre (ELIC) at the College of SSH of HU, in collaboration with the USA Embassy in Ethiopia, has organized an English Language Improvement training for Hawassa University's academic staff, graduate students and teacher trainers from Hawassa College of Teacher Education from June 22 to 23, 2923 at the AU Hall, HU.
Dr. kebede T/Michael, Associate Dean for Academic Affairs at CSSH, welcomed the trainer and explained the purpose of the training for participants. He said that Hawassa University in general is determined to ensure academic quality, so it works with several local and international collaborators who would help to contribute towards that goal. He also added that the College of Social Sciences and Humanities is committed to empower its staff and students through such trainings to update the teaching staffs with timely issues related to communication in 21st century targeting soft skills, among others.
Dr. Mihreteab Abraham, the Coordinator of English Language Improvement Center at HU, said on his part that a total of 60 teachers and 65 graduate students from Hawassa University and Hawassa College of Teacher Education who applied ahead for the training are participating as per their request. Dr. Mihreteab mentioned that the Centre is now working with national and international organizations to boost the English language proficiency of young academic staff with the goal of helping them to write research articles and get published on globally accredited journals.
The two days' training wad given by Mr. Cody Gleason, an English Language Fellow from the US State Department, US Embassy in Addis Ababa, focusing on topics such as Soft skills and Entrepreneurship, Academic writing and Research methods, and how to deal with English Proficiency Exams like IELTS & TOEFL.
Mr. Yohanan Yokamo, Director of International Relations and Alumni Affairs at HU, had also acknowledged the positive contribution of such trainings in staff and students capacity building and the priceless role of the US embassy in boosting HU's performance through its longstanding collaborations. He thanked the trainer for his part, and promised to strengthen the university's collaboration further.
