CNCS Hosts Consultative Workshop

College of Natural and Computational Sciences Hosts Consultative Workshop.

In the workshop conducted on the risks of environmental pollutants – Environment and Human Health on 31st of March 2022, Dr. Zeytu Gashaw, Dean, College of Natural and Computational Sciences, said Ethiopia is home to several networks of lakes, reservoirs, rivers, and small water bodies. But, most of these are under constant threat by constant pollution through the discharge of industrial effluents, untreated domestic and municipal sewage, etc.

He added that heavy metals are well-known environmental pollutants due to their toxicity, persistence in the environment, and bioaccumulative nature. The accumulation of certain metals in the body causes heavy metals poisoning due to exposure through food, water, industrial chemicals, or other sources and harms the environment and human health. Finally, he expressed his expectations with this consultative workshop that it can develop a common understanding and promote healthier environments to improve human health by playing the right role to control maximum pollution as responsible citizens.

According to the schedule, the researchers present their research findings on heavy metals in the environment neighboring the Hawassa industrial zone, awareness and practice of the community on the disposal of expired and unused pharmaceuticals in Hawassa city, and efforts made to manage and the need to take further actions to prevent environment and human health in Ethiopia. Finally, the participants made fruitful discussions on the issues.
