HU's Women, Children, Youth and HIV/AIDS Directorate was established in 2002 G.C to ensure gender equality and empowerment of female students and staff in every activity of the university.
Vision
HU's Women, Children, Youth and HIV/AIDS Directorate strives to ensure the realization of a gender-responsive university in which substantive gender equality is realized.
Mission
The mission of the directorate is to enable the university to excel in providing a gender-responsive organizational environment and to integrate gender into the function of the university in order to attain gender equality and women’s empowerment.
Activities performed by Women, Children, Youth and HIV/AIDS Directorate
Students welcome
The welcome program starts at the beginning of every academic year. Junior and senior members of the gender club take the responsibility of receiving newly arrival students and assist them with their luggage and direction. Despite facilitating the reception of students the directorate distributes informative brushers for the new arrivals. The directorate also prepares a welcome ceremony. In such ceremonies, junior female students share their experience about the campus life for fresh students.
The directorate also follows the proper placement of fresh female students in accordance with their choice and the university rules as well as regulations.
Training
In collaboration with various governmental and Non-Governmental Organizations (NGOs), the directorate facilitates different pieces of training for female students. The training that are facilitated by Women, Children, Youth and HIV/AIDS Directorate cover various thematic areas such as:
- Assertiveness
- Life skill
- Leadership
- Awareness creation on HIV/AIDS
- Reproductive health
- Sexual harassment
- Study skills and Note-taking
- Human rights etc.
- Girls’ tutorials
The directorate, in collaboration with academic departments/schools and the university, facilitates tutorial classes on selected courses for female students.
Economical Support
The directorate, in cooperation with partner organizations, helps needy female students with financial support on a monthly basis. In this regard, more than 200 students get such assistance every year. The directorate also avails photocopy service for students with financial problems. It also provides needy female students with sanitary and stationery materials, including soap, tissue paper, sanitary pads, exercise book and pen.
Other activities
The directorate helped dismissal and readmitted students in collaboration with various organization and different departments/schools of the university by arranging certificate level training in areas of Supports girls with special needs;

Give guidance and counseling service;
Played a major role in organizing and capacitating the university’s gender club;
Provides internet and other services for female students;
Collaborated with DKT Ethiopia and FAWE/Packard Foundation for the construction and furnishing of reproductive health kiosk at the University’s premises; and
Currently, the directorate is developing a gender workplace policy
Enhancing Partnership
The Directorate within few years of its establishment succeeded in creating partnerships with various governmental and Non-Governmental Organizations (NGOs) that are working on gender-related issues. In this regard, over the past few years, we managed to establish strong collaboration with an organization such as:
