The former Basic Science Department (BSD) of Hawassa College of Agriculture was the nucleus for the establishment of the then Faculty of Natural Science in 2001. At the establishment, the faculty had only five departments (Applied Biology, Applied Chemistry, Applied Mathematics, Applied Physics and Applied Statistics) all of them offering undergraduate programs in applied sciences.

Currently, CNCS has one Faculty (Faculty of Veterinary Medicine) and eight departments (Department of Biology, Chemistry, Physics, Geology, Biotechnology, Statistics, Mathematics and Sport Sciences). In addition to undergraduate program, CNCS is working hard in expanding postgraduate programs in MSc and PhD. Right now, as shown in Table below, CNCS is running 11 undergraduate, 23 MSc and 5 PhD Programs. Moreover, 1 undergraduate, 5 MSc and 9 PhD programs will be launched in the near future.

CNCS has 216  (5 BSc, 161 MSc and 50 PhD) academic, 40 technical and 44 administrative staff on duty and 5,313 students in all programs. The proportion of female student is 39.64%, 17.44%,10%, and 8.48% in under graduate regular, summer, weekend, and evening programs respectively. Overall proportion of female in all programs is 22.4% of the total undergraduate students.
