Hawassa University is proud to announce the promotion of Dr. Achamyelesh Gebretsadik Tekle to the rank of Full Professor, making her the first female full professor in the history of the university.
Professor Achamyelesh holds a Diploma in Comprehensive Nursing from Gondar College of Medical Science (1996), a B.Sc. in Public Health from Debub University (2004), a Master’s degree in Public Health from Addis Ababa University (2010), and a Ph.D. in Public Health from the joint program of Hawassa University and Addis Continental Institute of Public Health (2015).
With over two decades of distinguished service in public health, clinical research, and academic leadership, Professor Achamyelesh is an internationally recognized expert in maternal and child health, nutrition, cancer epidemiology, and strengthening health systems. Her work has directly shaped national health policy through sustained collaboration with Ethiopia’s Federal Ministry of Health, where she has led the development and technical review of national nutrition guidelines and strategic documents.
She has been awarded Top Researcher of the College of Medicine and Health Sciences and Top Researcher of Hawassa University in recognition of her outstanding contributions to research.
Professor Achamyelesh has authored over 50 peer-reviewed publications and led numerous large-scale research initiatives, including landmark studies on newborn care, cancer burden, and community-based maternal health interventions. Her technical mastery spans infant and young child feeding (IYCF), micronutrient supplementation, and evidence-based program evaluation.
Professor Achamyelesh is serving as Director of Quality Assurance and Enhancement Directorate at Hawassa university, Co-Chair of the EPHA Maternal, Neonatal, and Child Health Technical Working Group, and Chairperson of the Female Academician Network at the College of Medicine and Health Sciences. She continues to mentor PhD and MPH students, review national curricula, and provide technical assistance to UNICEF, the Global Fund, and WHO.
