Hawassa University leadership held a consultative meeting with representatives of the Norwegian Church Aid led by Kidist Belayneh, NCA's Country Deputy Director, to strengthen collaboration and establish a shared direction for Norwegian government-supported development projects.
Dr. Tafesse Matewos, Vice President for Research & Collaboration at Hawassa University, welcomed the delegation and highlighted the long-standing partnership between the Norwegian government and Hawassa University that stretches over two decades and half. He noted that the collaboration, particularly through the NORAD-supported projects, has produced significant achievements over the years.
According to Dr. Tafesse, the partnership has enabled more than 200 university staff members to pursue masters and doctoral studies, supported extensive research that has contributed to policy development, facilitated the establishment of modern laboratories, expanded community service initiatives, and created opportunities for youth engagement across various sectors.
Dr. Tafesse explained that the primary objective of the meeting was to strengthen cooperation and develop a common framework for implementing projects supported by the Norwegian government.
Prof. Andargachew Godebo, Coordinator of the ICP V Project at Hawassa University, also presented an overview of the project's objectives and implementation. He emphasized that, unlike previous initiatives, the ICP V Project places a strong focus on strengthening the food system, reflecting evolving development priorities.
Representatives of the Norwegian Church Aid reaffirmed their commitment to working closely with Hawassa University and stressed the importance of coordinating ongoing initiatives under a unified framework. The parties also agreed to formalize their collaboration through a joint agreement.
They finally agreed on the idea of preparing a memorandum of understanding (MoU) to be signed amongst Hawassa University, the Norwegian Church Aid, and Mekelle University and enhance institutional cooperation and promote coordinated efforts in research, capacity building, and sustainable development.
