Hawassa University Leads National Assessment of Ethiopia’s Curriculum Reform

Hawassa University in collaboration with the FDRE Ministry of Education has officially launched a high-level two-year grand research project which aims to evaluate the National Curriculum Reform (2021-2025) assessing overall process of curriculum designing, materials development and implementation over grades 1-12 and adult training at the Ethiopian Management Institute, Addis Ababa.

Dr. Samuel Assefa, Dean of the College of Education at Hawassa University, highlighted that Hawassa University initiated this grand research project and successfully secured funding from the Ministry of Education. He noted that Hawassa University is spearheading the project implementation alongside centers of excellence in education from Bahir Dar, Jimma, and Addis Ababa universities.

Mrs. Zafua Abraha, A/CEO for Curriculum Design at MoE and delegate of the State Minister for General Education, highlighted the project as essential for bridging the gap between the vision of the reform and its practical implementation on the ground. She affirmed the Ministry’s commitment to fully support the successful implementation of the research project and acknowledged Hawassa University and the other center of excellence involved in project.

Dr. Ing. Fisiha Getachew, Vice President for Academic Affairs at HU, in his keynote speech emphasized that this is a first-of-its-kind assessment of Ethiopia’s homegrown curriculum reform, covering grades 1-12 and adult training which would help properly document and assess the overall curriculum reform process underway.

The project coordinator at Hawassa University, Mr. Teketel Adane, presented a comprehensive roadmap of the proposed research project noting that it is aligned with the National Education Road Map (2018-30) and National Curriculum Reform 2021-25.  He further explained that the research is designed in a way that meets rigorous scientific standards.

Scholars from across the nation will collaborate to   refine the research framework and design data collection tools over the next five days.

During the discussion, it was pointed out that the project reaffirms Hawassa University’s commitment to academic leadership and the future of Ethiopian education.
