Hawassa University Conducts Training on Thematic Research Proposal Writing

The Research Affairs Directorate of Hawassa University organized a two days training on from Nay 18-19, 2026 on thematic research proposal writing at AU Hall, Main Campus.

Prof. Fantaw Yimer, Director of Research Affairs at HU, explained that findings from a survey showed the need to strengthen the capacity of masters degree holders, PhD candidates, and early-stage PhD scholars in thematic research proposal writing saying that thematic research has become a national priority. The training was, thus, designed to enhance participants’ proposal writing skills, create awareness about thematic research, and help researchers identify and formulate research problems effectively.

Prof. Masresha Fetene, a veteran researcher and trainer from Addis Ababa University, emphasized that knowledge and research are crucial for Ethiopia’s development. He noted that Ethiopia’s contribution to global research output remains minimal, with one of the world’s lowest numbers of patents and a shortage of highly qualified, research-oriented academics. Thus, Prof. Masresha stressed the importance of targeted thematic research in revitalizing research activities within universities.

The training covered key topics including the concept and features of thematic research, alignment of thematic research with institutional research agendas, differentiation and graduate programs, and the recommended structure and infrastructure for thematic research initiatives.
