Hawassa University College of Law and Governance, School law became the first at the 3rd National Moot Court Competition on International Humanitarian Law (IHL)

Hawassa University, College of Law and Governance and the International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) Delegation in Ethiopia organized the oral rounds of the 3rd National Moot Court Competition on International Humanitarian Law (IHL) from 17-19 May 2018.


19 universities have participated in pre-oral round competition by submitting their memorial brief in the problem they have been given. After careful examination of their memorial by the ICRC, 8 Universities (Hawassa, Addis Ababa, Haramaya, Arba Minch, Jimma, Wollega, Dilla and Debremarkos) have qualified for the oral rounds. The oral rounds of the competition started on May 17, 2018 in Hawassa university main campus. After two rounds of quarter final competition on May 17, 4 teams (Hawassa, Addis Ababa, Haramaya and Arba Minch) have made it to the semifinal round. In the semi-final, Hawassa University has faced Addis Ababa University and Haramaya University faced Arba Minch University. After an intense court room competition, Hawassa and Haramaya have made it to the final.

The final round of the competition was conducted in the African Union Hall on Saturday 19 May, 2018 from 8:30 AM. Dr Tesfaye Abebe, HU Vice President for Research and Technology Transfer and Mr. James Reynolds, head delegate of the ICRC Ethiopia has been invited as guests of honor and they also made speech of greetings.

During the final Hawassa University, Represented by Derara Anshe, Saron Herpa and Tibebu Hailu couched by Fikre Tinsae, Argued as a prosecutor and their Haramaya counter parts argued as a defense lawyer. After a fierce competition judged by five experienced judges selected by the ICRC, Hawassa University won the competition. Wollega University has won the best memorial category of the competition.

Hawassa university is going to represent Ethiopian universities in the all African IHL moot court competition which is to be held in Arusha Tanzania in early November.
