HwU’s School of Medicine Goes International

Hawassa University’s School of Medicine is recognized by an international body that hosts the International Medical Education Directory (IMED), Foundation for Advancement for International Medical Education & Research (FAIMER), a U.S. based organization.

The school of Medicine, which started instruction on November 29, 2003, graduated its first Doctors of Medicine on September 08, 2009. The School graduated a total of 257 (197 males and 60 females) Doctors of Medicine since then. The graduates are now serving the region and beyond.

HwU’s Corporate Communication & Marketing Directorate and College of Medicine & Health Science put hands together in the accreditation process that enabled HwU’s College of Medicine & Health Science to become one of the five Ethiopian institutions recognized by FAIMER for its Medicine Program.

It is hoped that joining such international platforms helps HwU’’s School of Medicine to forge international partnerships in Medical Education and Research.

Hawassa University won Grants from NORHED

Hawassa University has won grants for four grand projects proposed by its different academic units some in partnership with foreign and local universities. Two projects from the Main Campus and two others from the College of Agriculture have secured funding from NORHED/NORAD for staff capacity building (Masters and PhD), collaborative research and training.

The two projects at the Main Campus are one from College of Social Science & Humanities- School of Language & Communication Study and the other is from College of Law & Governance from Governance & Development Studies. The project creates opportunity for Academic staff from Hawassa and Addis Ababa Universities to pursue their PhDs, at least 50% opportunity being prioritized for women faculty in the respective Departments. Masters Scholarship opportunities are also expected for academic staff both at AAU & HwU. The Southern Nations, Nationalities & People’s Region, SNNPRG, which is the mosaic of cultures and people, is expected to benefit a lot from this big venture.

In the second project- ‘Institutional Cooperation for Capacity Building of Universities and Local Authorities for Democratic and Economic Governance in South Sudan and Ethiopia (ICBULGOV)’- Hawassa University collaborates with the University of Juba, South Sudan and UMB, Norway. This project is also set to create opportunities for HwU’s staff to pursue their PhD’s. There will also be Masters Scholarship opportunities for HwU’s female graduates. What is special about this project is that it caters for short-term training opportunities for about 250 local leaders at different levels.  A tuition waiver scholarship scheme is also expected to benefit about 60 local officials. At last, the project also establishes a Center for Policy and Development Research at HwU.

Of the two grand projects to be hosted by HwU’s college of Agriculture one is on Climate Smart Agriculture and the other is in the area of Biotechnology and Tissue culture. The two projects are also comprehensive endeavors having staff capacity building (both at PhD and Masters Level), collaborative research and training undertakings as their priority. Both of the projects are expected to contribute to the government objectives in achieving a Food-secured nation and, consequently, serve the wider community.

The successful execution of these five year projects could foster HwU’s stride towards achieving its vision.
