President’s message

Dr. Ayano Berasso

Dear staff members and HU community,

It is an honour for me when I extend my warm welcome to the 2012 E.C (2019/20 G.C) academic year. I would like to thank you all for your effort in making the last academic year a success. We closed 2011 E.C (2018/19 G.C) with remarkable achievements in three major areas: teaching-learning, research and community services due to the combined effort of our committed academic and administrative staff, expats and visiting scholars, domestic and international partners, the 40,000+ student population and communities of HU.

Having said this, my message for the current academic year (2012 E.C) revolves around the three important pillars that I mentioned above: teaching-learning, research and community services. I believe, reflecting both on the strengths and limitations of the last academic year from the perspective of the three pillars is essential to realize our boarder mission of becoming one of the top ten universities in East Africa by 2025 G.C. Hence, my message is structured in three sections.

Teaching-learning:

The teaching learning process is one of the most essential activities that HU has been engaged in with the ultimate objective of producing qualified and competent graduates over the past four decades. The academic calendar of 2011 EC was not different from the past in that the teaching learning process went smoothly in all 94 bachelor, 104 masters and specialty and 22 PhD programmes in 8 colleges across the 7 campuses within HU. The biggest event of the calendar year was the graduation ceremony held in July, 2011 E.C. More than 10, 000 students graduated successfully from various undergraduate (Bachelor), Masters and PhD programmes. This is a significant accomplishment for HU and those who devoted their time, energy and resources to make the dreams of graduates a reality.

Although the graduation ceremony is an important event in the life of graduates and those involved in the overall all development of students, it doesn't necessarily mean a complete detachment from HU and the lifelong process of learning. For one thing, graduates of 2011 E.C would become HU alumni like their predecessors scattered all over the world in their professional career. Notwithstanding differences in their background, place of origin and the fields of specialization they have been trained during their stay, graduates of HU have one thing in common: they become members of the global HU alumni community always striving to excel in their career and never settle for less than their best. For the other, they would become ambassadors of HU using their accumulated knowledge and expertise for the socio-economic development of the country and benefit of humanity at large.

However, despite the enormous success that we have had in teaching-learning, we have limitation when it comes to tracing the whereabouts of our graduates and alumni. Thus, in 2012 E.C we have to make sure that HU alumni chapter is going to be established to create a platform for exchange of ideas and share experience between the alumni community and HU.

Research:

Research and dissemination of knowledge and best practices is the second most important activity of HU. In addition to the thematic areas identified by HU to prioritize areas of research, a large number of individual and joint endeavours were launched by the staff and researchers from partner institutions in 2011 E.C. This was supported by a myriad of national and international conferences, workshops and trainings organized by colleges and institutes aimed at creating platform for dissemination of knowledge and research findings. ISSD-BENEFIT, CASCAPE and BENEFIT REALIZE are some of the research activities carried out by staff of HU and international partners in 2011 E.C. However, it is worth noting that a large number of disciplinary and thematic researches were and still are being conducted by the staff at HU throughout the academic year of 2011 E.C.

Although conducting research and producing knowledge in various streams is one among other responsibilities of HU, much remains to be done in terms of knowledge dissemination and getting published. Only a small number of our research findings are disseminated among the global scientific community and some are put into practice for the sake of solving societal problems. Thus, there is a need for us to work hard on the direction of knowledge dissemination and publication in 2012 E.C.

Community Services:

Last but not least, is community services rendered by HU in 2011 E.C. The fact that community services comprise a wide range of activities and professional support offered by individuals and/or groups from HU to the surrounding community, it is difficult to come up with a closer and somewhat approximate estimate for the last academic year. This is mainly because individuals may not necessarily report the community services they offer to the concerned directorate unless they are coaxed to present evidence for promotion and other related upward mobility in their career at HU. As such, some of the community services delivered over the last academic year, are not exclusively limited to, but include: free medical treatment and consultation to the surrounding community by the College of Medicine and Health Sciences, spread of improved seeds to farmers... etc.

Once again, in this academic year, there is a need for us to work more on the systematic delivery and recording of community services rendered by colleges, institutes, departments and schools at HU.

Finally, having said this, I would like to welcome the new undergraduate and graduate students who are assigned by the Ministry of Science and Higher Education (MoSHE) to our university and those who decided to pursue their graduate studies at HU in 2012 E.C (2019/20 G.C).

May the new academic year be a year of success and more accomplishment!

Sincerely,

Dr. Ayano Berasso (President)
