Vice President for Academic Affairs

Hawassa University (HwU) is one of the government funded and autonomous Higher Learning Institutions (HLIs) in Ethiopia(PRO/No. 127/1999). It has four campuses, three of which are located at Hawassa town, the capital of Southern Nations, Nationalities, and Peoples Regional State (SNNPRS); and 270 km from Addis Ababa whereas the fourth campus is located at Wondo Genet which is situated 30 kms from the center.

The university is one of the biggest and top ranking universities in the country. It is also one of the two universities, in addition to University of Addis Ababa, to have a membership in the Association for African Universities (AAU).

Due to the decision by the government of Ethiopia to expand HLIs and huge investment in the sector, the university has assumed rapid growth both in its infrastructure, teaching-learning, and research facilities. The university has also undergone institutional transformation in its organizational structure and business processes since 2008. As the result the academic and research wing of the university is re-organized into seven colleges and one institute as cost centers and the smallest academic and research units being Departments and Schools comprising one to several programs respectively. Hence, it gives me a great pleasure to provide you a brief information as to current status of HwU focusing on training programs, academic staffs and students, research and community services and also collaborative activities.

Nowadays, we are training students in 58 undergraduate and 45 post graduate programs (at both master and PhD levels), in the broader areas of Technology, Natural and Computational Sciences, Agriculture, Medicine and Health Sciences, Forestry and Natural Resources, Business and Economics, Law and Governance, and also Social Sciences. The 5 PhD programs, i.e.Agronomy, Soil science, Animal nutrition, MPH and Horticulture have only started since 2010/2011.

The staff development plan of the university has been progressing pretty well with a total number of academic staffs amount to 1,203, out of which 518 are on study, research or sabbatical leaves.

Currently, we are catering a total student population of 15,965 training in (58 )undergraduate and (45 ) postgraduate programs as of 2011/2012 academic year and striving to attain the set target 30000 by the year 2015. It is worth mentioning that 19% of these students are females. We have already achieved the 70:30 training direction by the government,78% being in the areas of Sciences and Technology; and the remaining 22% are studying social science disciplines.

The university has also been providing training opportunity at undergraduate and post graduate levels to the community at Hawassa town and nearby through extension and summer schemes. Altogether 4,323 students are enrolled in these modalities.

Research and researching at HU has relatively been well-founded within the frame work of clearly set priority areas, strategies and guide lines. Both students and staffs are undertaking research projects funded by government budget and donor institutions. A total of 151 (91 government funded and 50 foreign aid)  research projects are currently being undertaken at the university. It is again important to  mention that continuous skill trainings are being given to staffs and students on project development, research methodology and writing skills to enhance their capacity. The university also has its own journal entitled “Journal of Science and Developement” as a means to disseminate research out puts. Moreover,Seven(7) technology villages namely, Dale, Borecha, Hawassa Zuria, Hawassa town Hula, Wondogenet and Ziway  have been established to extend outreach services to the community and are meant for center of technology transfer, field trails and also disseminate research out puts of applied nature.

We have collaborative understandings with various national and international organizations, research institutes, and universities aiming at enhancing our capacity in training, research and serving the community at large. To mention some of these, Alabama A & M University, University of Saskatchewan, Maastricht School of Management, Makerere University, Wageningen University, Kenyatta University, Universitat Hohenhiem, University of Nijmegen, University of Applied Sciences, the Scottish Agricultural College, University College Cork, University of Oslo, Justus Liebig University Giessen, University of Foggia Colorado state University, and Czech University of Life Science. We are looking forward to collaborate and work together with other universities and organizations for the welfare of mankind.

Kind regards
