Hawassa University is one of the Public Universities located at Hawassa City, the capital of Southern Nations Nationalities and Peoples’ (SNNPR) Region. SNNPR is home over 47 ethnic groups where diverse cultural and language groups co-exist in unison. The region has a number of UNESCO registered heritage sites including the Konso Terrace agricultural practice. Consequently, the region is a natural laboratory where various social sciences and humanities studies can be carried out.

Hawassa University (HwU)

Hawassa University was established at Hawassa City in April 2000. Since 1976 the different colleges of HU had been operational starting with the College of Agriculture. The University has been formed by merging three colleges together found in southern Ethiopia: Awassa College of Agriculture (ACA), Wondo Genet College of Forestry and Dilla College of Teacher Education and Health Sciences.

The university has since upgraded its capabilities by opening   new colleges, institutes and departments, programs and research facilities. Currently, HU is actively engaged in expansion activities to increase its intake capacity in under graduate and graduate programs. Today, HU is a comprehensive university engaged in the provision of all-round education, research, training & community service through its diversified areas of academic units. HU has over 45 schools and departments running graduate programs both in MSc and PhD levels in various fields of studies.

Mission of Hawassa University

The mission of the university is  to  advance  knowledge,  enhance  technology  creation  and  transfer,  promote  effective  entrepreneurship,  and  inculcate  a  responsible  and  democratic  attitude  through  training,  research,  and  public  services;  thereby,  contributing to the development of the nation.

Hawassa University School of Graduate Studies

The Hawassa University School of Graduate Studies offers graduate level studies in over 45 disciplines reflecting the university’s vast range of academic experience.

The university has over 31 thousand students both in graduate and under graduate programs in Colleges of Agriculture, Health Sciences, Social Sciences and Humanities, Business and Economics, Natural and Computational Sciences, Forestry and Natural Resources, Law & Governance and Institute of Technology.

Since Hawassa University offers graduate level programs in almost all of the Departments and schools, over 2,000 students are enrolled in the various post graduate programs. Now a days , the diversity of our academic programs as well as the  strong  intellectual environment of our university  is attracting  applicants  not only from  inland but  also from  the neighbouring  African countries. Hence, Hawassa University welcomes academic and research institutions, GOS and NGOs who would like to work with in academic research and community service endeavours.

Objectives of the Collaboration

  • To provide professional and academic exchange   for instance, in student co- advising, seminar and workshop participation and scientific paper presentations. 
  • To create a net work of researchers and educators in various fields of studies so that joint teaching and research projects can be initiated and technology transfers can take place. 
  • To create   student and staff exchange opportunities between HU and the collaborating Universities.  HU has   experience in working with foreign students and staff although with a limited number. 
  • To create joint programs to bring about global exposure and mobility for   graduates of partnering universities as it will create an opportunity for them to study in a cultural set up which obviously is different from their own.

Similarly, Maastricht School of Management ;University of Nijmegen; The Scottish Agricultural College; Wageningen University;  Universitat Honenheim; University of Applied Sciences -Germany; University College Corck; University of Oslo ;Justus-Liebig University Giessen (JLU);University of Foggia-Italy; Czech University of  Life Sciences; University of Helsinki; Norwegian School of Veterinary Science; Universidad Extremadura –Spain are among the European universities that have partnership with  Hawassa University   Likewise; Sokoine University of Tanzania; Confucius Institute of China; Kenyatta  University of Kenya; and University of Juba  have bilateral linkage with our university.

Hawassa University is also a member of Erasmus –Intra-ACP Academic Mobility network funded by Ethio-EU. Hence, it has agreements with seven African Universities. These are University of Free State, South Africa North West University, South Africa; Polytechnic of Namibia, Namibia; University of Boe, Cameroon; Kwame Nukrumah University of Science & Technology (KNUST), Ghana; Makerere University, Uganda & University of Ardhi, Tanzania.
